HISTORY OF LEEDS PLAY NETWORK

Members of Leeds Play Network first came together in 1988. As a group we all had an interest in children's play and development. The group consisted of paid and voluntary playworkers, youth and community workers, parents and other interested groups.

 

The Leeds Play Network committee agreed a principal common aim :
to support the Child's Right to Play, as published in Article Seven on the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

 

Leeds Play Network is now an umbrella organisation made up of both voluntary and statutory groups interested in improving play for school age children. It seeks to  educate the public generally in the importance of play to children's development.

 

Leeds Play Network consists of six Trustees : Lynne Smith, Brian Cheesman, Fraser Brown, Sam Perkins, Lisa Parrott and Richard Smedley.  

 

In 1992 the Re-Play Project established a scrap store in south Leeds. The project aims to provide recycled scrap materials for use by adults, children and young  people in art, craft and making. 

Through the continuing development of Leeds Play Network and Re-Play we are able to offer more play services than ever before. By increasing the opportunity of free advice, support and information, as well as offering cheap practical resources for playworkers, we believe that the children and young people of Leeds will enjoy and benefit from new and exciting future play opportunities and experiences.

 

THE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF LEEDS PLAY NETWORK

 

• Increasing awareness generally of the importance of play in the child's development.

• Promoting the development of new, and the improvement of existing, play provision.

• Promoting the increased involvement of parents, carers and local communities in provision for children's play.

• Promoting, in collaboration with other voluntary organisations, statutory authorities and agencies, the development and implementation of an equal opportunities play policy for the city of Leeds.

• Playschemes

• Playgroups

• Nurseries

• Out of School Clubs

• Youth Groups

• Community groups / clubs

• Childminders

• Uniformed groups

• Community Arts Groups

 

Leeds Play Network also provides:

 

Training :

A variety of business and playwork training, supporting and improving the delivery of play provision throughout Leeds.

 

Re Play:

A store providing inexpensive recycled resources for use by playworkers, enabling children and young people to make and create.

 

Support for Out of School provision and Playschemes:

Currently Over 250 Out of School Clubs and playschemes are offered support and advice through Leeds Play Network.

 

Leeds Play Network is constantly seeking funding to further its aims and objectives.
